Rutledge doesn’t answer. The man leans heavily against the side of the boat, gripping the rails, standing still and silent as if bearing an enormous weight or a crushing guilt. He looks toward the orange sky above the city and the icy blackness in the lake.
Amy rocks her child in her arms, quietly repeating, ‘Thank you, Lord,’ and ‘Jesus saves.’ The woman’s faith is incorrigible.
